Senior Year Projects
Child oral health presentation
- For community dental health it was imperative to develop presentations which catered to the population audience. In this presentation it was important to make it specialized to children with autism prior to visiting Lanterman Regional Home visits as most of the clients had some type of special needs.
Dental health research
- This project was aimed at researching products or treatment modalities in evidence-based research. We find that some patients and population do not want to use fluoride and our research helped in finding a product that would include the same qualities of fluoride in helping prevent dental decay and reverse initial caries. The product is called nano hydroxyapatite, our presentation involved several literary review of existing studies and research to find an alternative to fluoride.
- Along with my colleagues and research partners we created an informative video based on our research findings. This poster and research were also entered into competition for the CDHA Spring Scientific Session. Although our poster did not win the findings and literature we researched are a vital procession in how to conduct viable, peer reviewed, and evidence based research.
Histology
- Histology is an important factor in understanding morphology, origins of orofacial structures, and pathologies which can affect the practice of dental hygiene.
- Being able to recognize normal morphology, anomalies and congenital abnormalities is important to provide specialized care towards any special circumstances.
Tooth formation
- Understanding amelogenisis allows for a better vision of the development, topography, surface, and dimension of areas not clinically visible.
- The formation of teeth involves cells and stages which if interrupted can trigger some disorders which affect different levels of tooth development.
- In this video explain the formation of dentin in conjunction with formation of enamel known as appositional growth.

Assess-Diagnose-Plan-Implement-Evaluation
- This project involved implementing an oral care program in a community setting. In this case we were able to implement our program at Marycrest Manor, a living facility catering to Alzheimers and Dementia patients. In order to provide evidence based and focused care it was necessary to perform an ADPIE format guided plan involving an Assessment of the populations needs thorough survey, Diagnose the needs of the population based on answers given, Plan by setting goals and objectives for the target population by Implementing the program based on the needs, Evaluation of the program with pre and post surveys with reflections on how to improve our program.
- This project also allowed us to make a difference in the lives of those being cared for and help educate nursing staff on oral health, specialized oral hygiene, and new skills to care for their patients.
Comprehensive Care Project
- Our comprehensive care project involved treatment of our patient with specific criteria such as systemic diseases correlating to periodontal disease. This project was very involved and required clinical treatment of perfomring 4 quadrants of non surgical periodontal therapy, paitent centered oral hygiene instructions, analysis of nutritional guidelines, and re-evaluation after treatment. My patient had a total of 9 medications for diabetes type II, hypertension, cardiac arrhythmia and hypercholesteremia which also had an implact on how I went about treatment.
- After finishing our treatment plan a wirtten report was done with a power point presentation on how our project went and what challenges we encountered during the project, reflections on things we could have done differently and outcomes.
- Refelcting on this project made me confident in being able to treat patients with modifying factors such as sytemic diseases and help incorporate and modify my treatment plan for my patients. I was also able to present my findings and outcomes with confidence in front of my classmates and present information which might not have been known to my classmates. Overall I believe I made a difference in my patients life, educate them on the importance of oral hygiene and set them on a road that will be impactful in thier home care.
Smoking Cessation Project
- As a part of being a health professional involves the promotion of health. Helping others improve thier health especially those who smoke and use tobacco products. This aim of this project was to provide a solution to a problem by providing intervention methods, implementing those methods, comparing them and the outcomes of my program are shared in reports and presentations.
- Refelcting on this project I was able to help a patient quit smoking and using tobacco products through my program. This would hold much benefit for my future patients and enable me to help those who are having trouble with smoking cessation. The methodology behind the project was the ability to implement the methods through a motivational brochure and assisting the patient by asking questions about their problem, advising the patient with information and education, assessing their needs, assisting by researching varying resources, and arranging methods of implementation.
Legacy Project
- This project entailed leaving behind something for upcoming cohorts. My group and I decided to do a video on how to properly perform a temporomandibular joint assessment. Careful assessment of TMJ disorders can help us to properly refer patients experiencing symptoms relating to TMD.
- I was able to replicate symptoms of TMD disorder and make a video with my classmates showing what measurements to take and what specific movements the TMD process evaluation for occlusion and cariology class.
